Office 2021 End of Support: What Should Your Business Do Before October 13?
Prepared by NUPC Technology | September 21, 2026
Office 2021 end of support arrives on October 13, 2026. After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, bug fixes, or technical support for Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021.
That does not mean Word, Excel, Outlook, and the other Office 2021 applications suddenly shut down. Microsoft says the applications may continue to function. The important change is that newly discovered security vulnerabilities and software problems will no longer receive fixes from Microsoft.
For a business, the first step is not necessarily buying new software. It is finding out which version of Office is actually running on each computer.
What Does the October 13 Date Mean?
According to Microsoft’s Office 2021 support guidance and Office LTSC 2021 lifecycle announcement:
- Microsoft support ends October 13, 2026.
- Security fixes and bug fixes will no longer be provided.
- The software is not automatically deactivated because support ends.
- Microsoft 365 subscriptions follow a different lifecycle.
- Windows versions of Office 2016 and Office 2019 already reached end of support on October 14, 2025.
Microsoft notes that after Office 2021 reaches end of support, newly discovered vulnerabilities will no longer receive security fixes. That matters because Word, Excel, and Outlook can open documents, spreadsheets, email messages, and attachments that come from outside your business.
That distinction matters for applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook because employees regularly use them to open documents, spreadsheets, email messages, and attachments that originate outside the business.
Does This Affect Microsoft 365?
Not in the same way.
Office 2021 is a perpetual, one-time-purchase version of Microsoft Office with a defined support lifecycle.
Microsoft 365 is a subscription service governed by Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft 365 Apps continue receiving updates when the subscription, software version, and operating environment meet Microsoft’s current support requirements.
What About Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows Server 2022?
Microsoft 365 Apps are supported on Windows Server 2022 through October 2026. After that point, the configuration is no longer fully supported. Microsoft will continue providing security updates for Microsoft 365 desktop applications running on Windows Server 2022 through October 10, 2028 while organizations move to a supported configuration.
Businesses using Remote Desktop Services, shared server sessions, or other server-hosted Office environments should review their configuration separately rather than assuming the standard Office 2021 deadline tells the whole story.
What Should You Find Out About Your Office Installations?
Start with five questions:
- Which version of Office runs on each business computer?
- Is anyone maintaining an inventory of those installations?
- Are any computers still running Office 2019 or Office 2016?
- Do any accounting, legal, financial, medical, manufacturing, or other business applications depend on a particular version of Office?
- Who needs to approve an upgrade, and does the change involve licensing, hardware, compatibility, budget, or all four?
You do not need every answer immediately. Identifying the unanswered questions gives you a place to start.
Who Owns the Office Upgrade Decision?
One of the most common upgrade challenges is simple communication. The people who use Office every day may assume IT is already working on a plan. IT may be waiting for budget approval. Leadership may not know a decision is needed.
Before October 13, make sure the business has identified who will coordinate the decision-making process and the next steps.
What Comes After You Review Your Office Installations?
Microsoft recommends moving to Microsoft 365 Apps. For commercial organizations not ready for that move, Microsoft names Office LTSC 2024 as its current on-premises option. The right choice depends on your licensing, computers, and business applications, so allow time before Office 2021 end of support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Office 2021 stop working on October 13, 2026?
No. Microsoft says Office 2021 applications may continue to function after October 13, 2026. What stops is security updates, bug fixes, and technical support.
Does this affect our Microsoft 365 subscription?
Not in the same way. Microsoft 365 Apps follow the Modern Lifecycle Policy and keep updating while support requirements are met.
We still use Office 2019. Where does that leave us?
Windows versions of Office 2016 and Office 2019 reached end of support on October 14, 2025.
How do we find out which version we have?
Each Office application shows its product name and version in its account settings. Checking the installed product is more useful than assuming based on how Word or Excel looks.
